About Erich Maria Remarque
Interests: He was interested in playing the piano and having a musical career.
School years: In his schooling years Remarque studied at the University of Münster and was known for being the “best in his class” said by one of his peers.
Army life: At the age of 18 he enlisted in the German army. While fighting in the Western Front he acquired many injuries.
After the army: When he became discharged Remarque took a teacher's course and then took a teaching job for a year. Remarque even became a stonecutter and a test-car driver for a tire company.
Love life: Remarque was married twice before he married the actress Paulette Goddard in 1958. The first two times he was married to the same women, Jutta Ilse Ingeborg Ellen Zambona, in 1925 and in 1938. They constantly cheated on each other where his longest and intercontinental affair was with Marlene Dietrich.
Writing days: First, he started writing as a sporting journalist and then rose in position and became the assistant editor of Sportbild. His first novel, All Quiet on the Westerns Front, was controversial to that time. This novel has sold 1.2 million copies in its first year. Later he wrote its sequel, DER WEG ZURÜCK (The Way Back), in 1931. He wrote novels, a documentary, plays, screenplays, and films.
His life: He was born in Osnabrück, Lower Saxony. In the 1930s his books were banned in Germany and publicly burned by the Nazis. In 1938 Remarque lost his citizenship to Germany and moved to the United States where he became a citizen there. After World War II Remarque settled down in Switzerland. On September 25, 1970, Remarque died from aneurysm at Locarno.
